From the Editor...

One of the enjoyments I get from producing this newsletter is recognizing the work of my fellow writers. Sometimes it is to feature their newest books, sometimes it is to include interviews of them when they talk about their work and the writing life. Inclusion in this modest venue will not likely gain them the recognition they deserve, but it's always a pleasure to do the newsletter. In fact, I am generally pleasantly surprised when another writer or reader offers up something for me to consider—and this issue is no different. Bert Herrman, founder of Alamo Square Distributors, author, and publisher offers his insight on "Gay Book Publishing Today" (page 5).

HerrmanBert Herrman is the author of

• Being, Being Happy, Being Gay: Pathways to
a Rewarding Life for Lesbians and Gay Men

• and TRUST/The Hand Book
He has published, and in most cases edited, 18 books through his press, Alamo Square Press, including the best seller What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality by Daniel Helminiak, which has sold close to 100,000 copies.  He is the founder and former owner of Alamo Square Distributors, the major gay/lesbian book seller in the West, for which he continues to serve as book buyer.

Another enjoyment for me is to allow writers and readers to express themselves through reviewing books they have enjoyed and, in the case of Tony Heyes (our English friend), I like to include his reviews as well as his opinion pieces. I enjoy including the helpful tips on writing from Patricia Nell Warren. I also attempt to announce upcoming writer/reader events, as I did with the Saints and Sinners writer's conference in New Orleans and the Borders Book Festival in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Consider this an invitation, therefore, to submit information about your books if you are a writer—especially if your work is published independently or by a small or university press. Please continue to submit book reviews, so that our readers will learn of books and writers they might not otherwise know about.
