US-smEditorial Egales a glbt publisher in Barcelona Spain and writer Ronald L. Donaghe have entered into the first of three separate contracts today to translate into Spanish Donaghe's series, "The Continuing Journals of Will Barnett." The first of the three books in the series is the novel Uncle Sean. In April and June of 2004 contracts for the translation of the other two books will be signed by both parties. Egales is projecting that the first book will be translated by December 2004.

Editorial Egales has translated such notable American English titles as Patricia Nell Warren's The Wild Man, which in Spanish is named El Hombre Bravo. Other well-known writers picked up for translation include Jim Grimsley, Christopher Bram, and Paul Monette.

The first book in Donaghe's Will Barnett series, Uncle Sean, was published in 2001, and a second edition in English was issued in 2004 as a Star Program book, chosen by publisher iUniverse for special promotion.

"This is not only a great opportunity to reach gay readers who speak a language other than English," Donaghe said, "but it is an important vindication of what is possible with a new publishing paradigm—'print on demand' (or POD) technology."

Barely three years after Uncle Sean was published by iUniverse, a POD company, sales of the book have warranted an undertaking by Egales to bring out the Spanish translation the traditional way, offering Donaghe a traditional publishing contract, along with an undisclosed amount of "an advance against royalties."

"I've now got the best of both worlds," Donaghe says. "A POD book that won't go out of print where I retain all the rights, and a traditionally published book in a foreign language. As I did with Egales, I am free to negotiate other language translations as well as film rights, or even other English language formats.

Two more contracts are to follow in April and June of 2004 for the other two books in the series. Editorial Egales is already looking at Donaghe's other gay fiction series "Common Threads in the Life."
