Controversial Chicago Author Publishes New Gay-Themed Novel

The Unborn Spouse Situation by Matt Rauscher: A new gay-themed novel
from a controversial voice out of the University of Illinois.

While a columnist for the Daily Illini, Matt Rauscher inspired
classroom debate, laughter, and in one instance, a boycott, over his fiery columns that dissected such divisive issues as affirmative
action, the Greek system, gay marriage, and religious conservatives in government.

In his first novel, The Unborn Spouse Situation, Rauscher tackles the issues of arranged marriage and gay rights, and combines them in a town called Normal, Illinois. The main character, Augie Schoenberg, is 22, an aspiring filmmaker at a school without a film school, and desperately single. He's just moved into the wildest party house on campus and has fallen hard for his roommate Victor Radhakrishna, a political activist who is, for Augie, "a practical demi-god: a crusader for justice in skateboarding shoes." The problem is, Augie is the only gay one in the house - or so he thinks.

Set in a raucous Midwestern college town, The Unborn Spouse Situation is a darkly comic novel of sex, betrayal, and cultural clashes. Whether in his relationship with Victor, or in two other doomed romances, Augie's search for love takes him from the cornfields of Illinois, to the gay beach and underground clubs of Chicago, and finally to London, where Victor's secret threatens to keep the two apart forever.

The Unborn Spouse Situation is the debut of a striking new voice in both gay and literary fiction. Destined to be as talked about as his infamous columns, the novel is intended for most audiences. Every race, religion and sexuality is represented in The Unborn Spouse Situation, and the ways the characters navigate around these differences may be the most surprising thing of all. The novel demonstrates the breadth of talent available from the new print on demand publishers, and the exciting opportunities to hear from new voices.

The novel is available now from Lulu.com, from the distributor Ingram, and at Amazon and other online retailers. For info

When Dr. Nathan "Nate" Morris moves to Reed, Illinois from Atlanta, Georgia to open a medical practice with his best friend, Amy Vaughn, he's looking forward to putting the past--and his homophobic family—behind him. Considering Reed's reputation as a "gay-friendly" town, starting over should be a cinch. But when Nate is attacked outside his office late one night in an apparent gay bashing, he starts to wonder if maybe the good folks of Reed aren't as accepting as he thought.

Sheriff Brandon Nash answers the call to a supposed gay bashing with feelings of skepticism. As an openly gay man holding an elected position, Brandon finds it hard to believe that Nate's attack is really a hate crime. Brandon may not know the reasons behind the attack, but as he looks into Nate's frightened eyes, there's one thing he's absolutely certain of: he'll do whatever it takes to keep Nate safe or die trying.

Forging a relationship isn't easy under the best of circumstances, and as Nate's assailant steps up his efforts, Nate and Brandon's budding romance is put to the test. Add to that the sudden appearance of Seth, the brother who disowned Nate years ago, and Nate's nerves are stretched to the breaking point. When a series of arsons begins, and Brandon expresses the belief that the burnings are a ploy to flush him out, Nate decides to leave Reed behind, believing everyone else will be safe once he's gone. Brandon is all set to do whatever he can to make Nate stay, but when the brakes on Nate's car are tampered with, the decision is nearly taken out of both their hands.
