From
the Editor...
We
had one of the hottest Junes on record here in Southwestern New Mexico,
and these first few days in July are in the triple digits with our
usual "monsoon" season no where in sight. So I've been languishing in
the heat between my job at the university and doing some freelance
editing at home. As a result of feeling sticky and lazy, I decided to
wait until after the 4th to bring out this issue. But it's a good one.
Contributors everywhere have been hard at work to help bring you
excellent reviews and articles.
I don't even know where to begin...
One of our associate editors, Betty Conley, has
contributed
reviews of Clay's
Way and Fingering the Family
Jewels. Arlene Germain reviews several books, no doubt keeping
her home
office desk cleared (she won't reveal her secret of how she is able to
read and review so much). Brian Bengtson has sent a poem for us to
ponder. His book of poetry, The
First Chill was reviewed here
in the April edition. And even though Cheri Rosenberg attended a
conference in New Orleans in June (talk about hot...that would have
been muggy, as well), she sent us three reviews for this issue. We also
hear from Gene Hayworth (our literary reviewer), and we have a short
short
story from prolific writer Jay Mandal, whose Precipice
is gaining ground. We get a thought-provoking article from writer
Kathe Koja, titled "Truth or Consequences," about writing fiction for
young adults. We let Jerry Flack and Tony Heyes go head to head over
the book, The Boys in the Brownstone.
I say "head to head" because they
each have a definite take on this new novel. And then Jerry tickles our
fancy with a whole slew of books, including a review of four books
under the title of "Eye Candy"...ok here's just a peak at the covers of
the two that caught my attention:

Roy Evans has sent a review of The
Early Journals of Will Barnett and
takes print on demand (POD) to task. Mekah Gordon, columnist for The
Normal Heart, does a book review,
and the inimitable William Maltese gives us a book review and an
interview on the coming of age of a crossdresser.
So it looks like you will not have a shortage of summer reading to
consider, just from this issue. So if you're suffering from the heat
the way I have been, settling somewhere cool and reading just might be
the best activity you can engage in, between dips in the pool and
an occasional escape to some restaurant to beat the heat.
