From
the Editor...December 2013
Time
has been getting away from me lately...Oh, I know where it goes, I like
what I'm doing that takes up my time, but retirement is hard. I'm
busier than ever. I have no idea how I ever had time for a full time
job. And I've been singing that refrain, now, for five years. It could
also be that reaching my sixties has also speeded time up a little. I
do know that every morning when I wake up, I discover that rigor mortis
has set in during the night, and so it takes me a little longer to get
my extremities working again, to say nothing of the extended time with
my first visit to the bathroom, once I can actually sit up, get my feet
on the floor, shuffle to the kitchen to get my coffee. I've got the
usual ablutions, of course, but it takes time to lay out all my
supplements and my two prescription meds.
But I've got a kind of third career going here. I still work for Amazon, still run my little editorial services company, Two Brother Press,
and still cast my eyes covetously to my latest novel, which is getting
scant attention from me. I hope to have blocks of time to work on it,
but as I say, there are only half as many hours in the day as there
used to be.
I now live in a small, historic town of Mesilla, New Mexico. It's
mainly a tourist town, and my house is right off the plaza. There's a
nifty cafe right across the street who has a retired French chef in
every morning to make French pastires, and then there's a coffee shop
just up the street where I like to go in the afternoons and catch up on
the lastest town gossip. The owner is lately from Quebec, Canada, where
she lived for twenty-five years and raised her children who are still
in Canada. One of the neat things about Mesilla is the number of gay
and lesbian couples who also live here and the gay and lesbian couples
who visit. I guess if a town is artsy fartsy and small enough, like
Mesilla, you just don't run into anyone who projects prejudice against
LGBTs. And now that New Mexico has become the seventeenth state to
allow gay marriage, it's just the icing on the cake.
At any rate, I've finally brought this page up to date. I know it will
only seem like a couple a days before a month has passed and I need to
update it again...meh!
